Connie McMakin

My name is Connie McMakin, I have been married to my wonderful husband, Leo “Pat” McMakin for 28 years and we have a blended family of 5 children, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 2 dogs. My husband and I are from Oklahoma and still have family there. When we moved to Florida 1988 I thought we were coming to Florida to make more money little did I know God had bigger plans for us!

I did not start out as a Christian. My family was Catholic and my mother always taught us that there was a God. I went to all the special classes that Catholics go to and went to confession every Saturday morning like a good little girl. However, I did not have a relationship with Christ.   It wasn’t until I became a single Mom, struggling with raising two small boys, working and going to school, that I really cried out in desperation to God.  I prayed for a good husband, a man that would be a good father to my two small boys.  Part of that prayer was that this man would believe in God. I promised God that if he sent me such a man that I would start going to church. Two weeks later, I met Pat. I forgot my promise to God even though He gave me everything I had asked for: a good man, a good father to my children, a new car, a new home...I still wasn’t happy! God started putting people and literature in my path that made me start asking questions. I got a lot of answers, however most of them were not the right ones. I became more confused. I began to turn to the person that God had sent to me, my husband, Pat.  Pat said to me, “Honey I can tell you what I think God is saying but you need to read His Word for yourself!”  So began my journey with Christ. Has it been smooth sailing?  Most definitely not!  However I have a personal relationship with the One at the helm of the boat and I know He will guide me through rough waters.   All I have to do is depend on Him.

God  opened the door for me as the Secretary/ Receptionist for North Park Baptist Church and for Kingdom Kids Academy. I love my job! I get to greet everyone as they visit us. I get to see the children as they come in so excited to see their teachers.  Growing up I did not have any big career plans.  I wanted a family.  I love children!  There is no better medicine than hearing a child's laughter!  I am so fortunate to be able to hear laughter as their teachers play with the children, making learning so much fun.  They are molding and shaping these little lives that God and their parents have entrusted to us.
